Accessibility Statement
Date of statement: 13 October 2026 · Draft version, to be validated with the official AMA generator
The managing body of the Local Natural Monument is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with Portuguese Decree-Law 83/2018 of 19 October, which transposes Directive (EU) 2016/2102 on the accessibility of the websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies.
This statement applies to the website https://canhaocarsico.pt/en/ and its Portuguese version (https://canhaocarsico.pt/). The Portuguese version of this statement is the official one.
1. Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with Decree-Law 83/2018 and with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, as adopted by the European standard EN 301 549. Non-compliances and content still to be assessed are listed below.
2. How this statement was prepared
An internal assessment was carried out by the development team on 13 October 2026, on the production build of the website (before launch):
- Automated testing: all 18 pages (9 in Portuguese and 9 in English) were checked with axe-core (version 4.10) against WCAG 2.0 and 2.1, levels A and AA, at desktop and mobile screen sizes. One colour contrast problem on a button was found and fixed; no violations remain.
- Manual checks by the team: contrast of every text colour combination (minimum 4.5:1), heading structure, page language, visible keyboard focus, layout on small screens without horizontal scrolling, and text alternatives for images.
- Still to be done: assessment with the AccessMonitor validator, the AMA "10 critical aspects of functional accessibility" checklist, and testing with disabled people and assistive technologies (screen readers).
3. What we have done to make access easier
- A "Skip to content" link at the start of every page.
- Headings and page regions (header, navigation, main content, footer) that screen readers can identify.
- Colour contrast of at least 4.5:1 for all text.
- Full keyboard navigation, with a visible indication of the focused element.
- Pages that adapt to mobile phones and to zoom up to 200% without loss of content.
- Information never conveyed by colour alone: map points have a number and a name, and a text list equivalent to the map is provided.
- No automatic animations. The website respects the operating system's "reduce motion" setting.
- Language is marked on both versions so that screen readers pronounce text correctly.
4. Content that is not accessible or still to be assessed
Known non-compliances and limitations
- Interactive map: the map (Leaflet library, with OpenStreetMap imagery) may not be fully usable with screen readers. The same information is available in the list of points of interest on the same page.
- Photographs: images in this test version are provisional. Text alternatives will be reviewed once the final photographs are in place.
- PDF documents (regulations, printable map, activity sheets and teacher's guide): not yet published. When they are, they should be accessible (tagged PDF) or have an HTML alternative.
- GPX trail files: not yet available. Each trail is described in text on the page.
Third-party content
Map background images are provided by OpenStreetMap and are outside our control. The "Open in Google Maps" link leads to an external service.
